Topic: Making a Jacket – Fleece Quality Question | Discuss

My 4yo needs a new fleece jacket. I made her a Nature Walk pullover using fabric.com fleece, but it’s not very warm (I’m never buying fleece there again!). Then I bought some Malden Mills fleece from Fabric Mart – it is fleecey on one side and sort of a hardish shiny knit on the other. I am planning to make a Sunday Brunch – either according to the pattern, or the version on the flickr group that just used the front and back yokes, extended.

My goal is for this to be as warm as the Children’s Place fleece she outgrew last spring. I think two layers of fleece might be overkill, but I’m not sure whether one is enough. Has anyone used Malden Mills? Will a single layer be enough? I could also line the jacket but I don’t know whether to use knit or woven. Suggestions?

How essential is a vest in a layering system | Page 2

90% of my hunting, i have four items for my tops. a merino shirt, a hot weather perforated shirt, my fleece vest, and my sitka 90% jacket.

those four things worn in any configuration can handle the challenging temps you find during Jan deer hunting. 17deg to 80 deg swings sometimes.

at the coldest, i wear everything in exactly the order i have listed above. wool, shirt, vest, jacket. as it warms, i ditch something. when it is hot and i am hiking..it is all in my pack except the perforated shirt. as it cools, i grab the vest. as a bowhunter, i LOVE a vest. keeps less bulk on my bow arm. build confidence in me, knowing my arm is free.

just me. i've done two wool shirts and left the perforated shirt at the truck. it works nice too. staying dry and comfy is a moving target for me. it is amazing to me that i am warmer with my vest under my jacket. if i want to feel cooler, i flip them. jacket with the vest outside. allows fine level adjustment.

i'm buying first lite for my brother for Christmas..and a cheap camo vest. tired of hearing him moaning about being too hot or too cold.
