Disc Golf United is one of THE best places (if not THE best place) to buy Innova Factory Seconds. Why? Because we’re the official online store for Innova East, which means we’re constantly updating our inventory with your favorite Innova disc models (even hard to find plastics), and we hand pick the coolest F2 stamps from the Innova East warehouses.

Terminology: F2 vs X-Out vs Misprint

Here’s a quick lesson on F2 lingo. Factory Second, F2, X-Out, and Misprint are often used interchangeably. But there are some differences. Factory Second and F2 are umbrella terms that encompass all discs not meeting manufacturer standards.

X Marks the Spot: The X-Out term is often linked to minor plastic defects happening on the production line. Many of these discs actually have a small “X” penned in the middle. In addition to that, these discs usually get a basic Innova X-Out stamp or an Innova F2 stamp. Other stamps have also been used in the past.

Misprint discs primarily deal with discs postproduction during the hot stamping process, which utilizes heat and pressure to apply logos / images via foil onto discs. Hot stamping is a skilled craft and nearly impossible to perform without mistakes. When these stamping mistakes happen, the discs receive multiple stamps to denote their F2 status. Most of these discs do not have plastic imperfections.

Types of Defects Found in F2s

There are many reasons why a disc becomes a Factory Second. Let’s first start with the misprinted stamps since these are the most common F2’s we see at Innova East and Disc Golf United.

Misprint stamps

Like we mentioned earlier, applying a hot stamp to a disc is not an easy or automatic process. You may not realize this, but you only get one shot at stamping a disc cleanly. Most discs are stamped without a hitch, but mistakes do happen. Here are some common stamping issues that cause F2’s.

  • Dropout: Foil did not stick to a small area of the stamp design

  • Bridging: Separate design/illustration elements are fused together

  • Too much heat or force used: stamp is seared into plastic

  • Not enough heat or force used: stamp is only partially applied

When a stamping issue happens, the disc is stamped again (in an obvious way) with the same or different stamp, and voilà a Misprint F2 is born. Common types of misprints are:

  • Multiple Stock stamps. Stock discs with their stock stamps are stamped the most, which means we get a bunch of discs with multiple stock stamps. An example would be a Star Mako3 disc with several “Star Mako3” stamps on the disc.

  • Multiple Innova Custom Department stamps. One of our busiest departments at Innova East is the custom stamp department. All kinds of stamping jobs flow through custom including those for disc golf events, company logos, player fundraisers, and more. Custom makes their fair share of F2’s and DGU gets first dibs at them.

  • Multiple DGU Original stamps: One of the Innova Custom Department clients is us, DGU. So, whenever we place orders for awesome stamps like Frolf Loops, or the War Pig, or a host of other cool designs, we get those misprints as well.

Randomly Delicious! When it comes to F2 Misprints, some will only have two stamps. While others will have more. The number of stamps, type of stamps, placement of stamps, and color of stamps can range widely from one factory second disc to another.

X-Out Defects

All of Innova’s disc production takes place at Innova West in California. So, it makes sense that most of the plastic defect X-Outs produced are kept and sold there. However, Innova East and DGU still see a modest amount of plastic imperfection Xouts come our way.

Here are some common reasons for X-outs:

  • Scuffs

  • Scratches

  • Chips

  • Small bubbles inside the plastic

  • Small dimples

  • Chocolate chips (dark plastic flecks in plastic)

  • Minor gouge in rim

Let’s get this straight: Discs with only minor aesthetic flaws / disc imperfections are sold. If we wouldn’t throw it. We’re not gonna sell it.

Pros and Cons of F2s

Most everything about F2’s are positive, but there are a few drawbacks. Let’s take a look at each side here:

Pros

  • Great price

  • Most DGU F2’s are stamp misprints, which means there’s nothing wrong with the disc itself

  • Find models/plastics you can’t find elsewhere

  • Cool stamps you wouldn’t normally have access to

Cons

  • Model / Plastic type / Weight selection is limited.

  • Colors generally random

  • Stamps can be unpredictable

  • Disc pictures are normally not available.

No pictures? Here’s why: Due to the volume of F2s we release each week and the huge variety of stamps, it's simply not possible to take pictures of every single disc. However, you will see some pictures with our occasional Bulk F2 releases. Keep in mind that you can always send color preferences in our “Item Specific Notes” section of the item. Though we can’t guarantee a match, we’ll do our best to find it. Feel free to call us at 800-339-2259 or email us at [email protected] to see what colors we have.

F2s by Plastic Type

A lot of discs pass through the Innova East warehouses every year. Every Week. Every day. Disc Golf United has access to whatever factory seconds produced at Innova East or find their way to our warehouses. You'll see all types of discs (putters, midrange discs, fairway drivers, and distance drivers) in all stock plastics. In addition, Disc Golf United also sees factory seconds of limited run plastics from Innova East’s Custom Stamp department. These plastics, which are not available in other stores, are usually reserved for event fundraisers and other special offerings. They include:

Recreation & Catch Discs, too
