6 Tips For Making Fake Flowers Look Real

1. Pick Quality Flowers with Good Reviews

The first step is to actually pick flowers that look good. No matter how well you 'dress up' a cheap looking flower, it'll still look cheap. Artificual flowers don't have to be expensive, but they can't look cheap!

Artificial is a price. Cheap is a look.

Below you'll find my personal favorites, so you're off to a good start!

2. Fluff Your Flowers

Fake flowers come packed for shipping, so they're a bit squished when they arrive at the store. Always take the time to fluff the leaves and the petals as much as possible.

Simply use your hand to smooth out any creases and reshape the stems. If you can, you might even bend a few petals back for a more realistic look!

3. Cut to Fit Your Vase

One of the great things about fake flowers is that they usually come with long stems to fit a variety of vases! It's tempting to just bend those stems to fit your vase to give you flexibility in the future for a different vase. That's okay'unless your vase is glass! There's nothing like a dead giveaway that a flower is fake if you can see the wired stem bent up! So always be sure to cut to size as needed.

4. Consider Adding Real to Fake

I love mixing real and fake flowers or even fake flowers with real greenery clipped from the garden! This is a very subtle way of enhancing the realness of your fake flowers, while making your arrangement fuller at the same time!

5. Add Some Water

If you have a glass vase, add just a bit of water to fill just the bottom. This little detail can make all the difference! Just be sure to change your water weekly.

6. Be Sure to Dust

When was the last time you saw a dusty arrangement of fresh flowers? Never!

A layer of dust on your fake flowers is a dead giveaway, so be sure to keep them clean. You can use a soft cloth or even an air canister like the ones used to clean computer keyboards.

Artificial Roses

These are my favorite go-to roses. These are real-touch roses, so they look and feel completely real! They are available in single stems of white, pink, and pink/yellow. They are available as fully bloomed versions (seen below) but some that are just starting to bloom, as well.

The stems are a nice brown color and look realistic. The leaves are the least realistic part, but usually, when you have a bunch of roses grouped together, you can't really see the leaves anyway.

I love these white ones, but they DO start to yellow over time so you will need to replace them eventually.

There are many places to order fake flowers online. Rather than give an exhaustive list, I wanted to share my personal favorite online shops that I come back to again and again. I will also include my honest review of each seller's artificial flowers!

Afloral: High Quality Faux Florals

Afloral is my go-to online shop for the most realistic flowers. (I have worked with them in the past, but this post is not sponsored.)

I have been impressed with Afloral's selection each season, and with the high quality of their artificial flowers. In addition, I love that they are a female-owned small business that is committed to sustainability! Check out their blog for floral design inspiration.

Michaels: Inexpensive Fake Flowers for the Seasons

Thirdly, some of my seasonal favorite fake flowers are from Michaels. Their florals are inexpensive and beautiful. The only downside is that their selection changes frequently, and popular flowers often go out of stock online.

In order to snag the best realistic artificial flowers from Michaels, browse their website early each season. (That means that you can find the best fall florals at the end of July, about two months before the season starts!)

Pottery Barn: More High Quality Artificial Flowers

Another place to buy artificial flowers made with high-quality materials is Pottery Barn. In addition to stems and bouquets, they also offer flower arrangements that are already styled in vases. Pottery Barn's collection is a bit smaller, but their fake hydrangeas and peonies are worth checking out.

How to Make Artificial Flowers Look Real and High End

Finally, here are some tips and tricks to help you style artificial flowers like an interior designer!

1. Trim Individual Stems with Wire Cutter

While there may be times that you do not need to cut artificial flower stems, generally you will want to do so. This is an especially important first step if you are styling your artificial flowers in a glass vase. (With a clear vase, you cannot simply bend the bottoms of the stems to fit, because they will be visible.)

First, hold your stems up to the vase. Generally, the stems should be twice as tall as the vase, but you may choose to go shorter or longer. Or, cut stems to different lengths for an organic look.

Next, use floral wire cutters to trim the stems to the appropriate length. It is better to start with a longer length if you are not sure'you can always trim them again!

(If you are able to bend and hide the long stems of fake flowers in an opaque vase, you may not need to trim them. This will allow you to restyle them in another vessel later.)

2. Arrange with a Floral Frog or Clear Tape

Secondly, it is helpful to use a hairpin flower frog (similar) to hold the stems in place. A floral frog is a metal or plastic disk with spikes or loops that help maintain the structure of your artificial flower arrangement. This is how I created the rose arrangement in the gold compote shown above.

Alternatively, you can use clear tape to create a grid pattern at the opening of a vase or planter. Then, insert the flower stems in between the grid lines to keep them standing upright.

3. Bend Stems and Branches for a Realistic Look

After you have cut your single stems to the desired length and styled them in a vase, you will want to bend the stems to make them look real.

If you observe flowers in nature, they are never perfectly straight. Thus, bending the stems of artificial flowers is an important step for achieving a realistic look.

I like to bend the stems around the outside of the arrangement downward so that the flowers drape over the side of the vase. You want the overall look to be balanced, but not too perfect.

Finally, fan out the petals on the flower heads so that they are full like real blooms!

4. Make a Statement with Artificial Flowers

Finally, I wanted to circle back to the concept of scale, which is an important basic of interior design that helps create a high end look.

Always consider the size of the space when shopping for artificial flowers. Opt for tall blooms or branches to add height to an entryway, sideboard, or open concept living room. Alternatively, style a small vase of floral stems on a nightstand or desk as an accent.

Matching your flower arrangement to the size of your space will help create a balanced and elegant look!
