Pony vs electric start

As mentioned below, very late 720s, 730s, and 830s were available with either electric start or pony start. In general, the further south you were, the more likely you were to pick electric start. If you lived in the Northern Plains and wanted your big Deere to start in the winter, you likely chose the pony start. Remember, this was an era before electric block heaters, etc, and the pony started with minimal electricity from a 6 volt battery, and then supplied heat to both the cooling and air intake system of the diesel.

The electric start relied on 4 6 volt batteries, and a lot of connections to make a 24 volt system. That system, with 62 years on the youngest of them, was not the simplest design. There have been kits to make electric start simpler on the big diesels, but reviews vary. Even in todays standards, a 730 or 830 is a lot to throw over with an electric starter in cooler weather.

If I'm not mistaken, Cat offered pony start on the big diesels after Deere dropped the two cylinders- it was reliable technology at the time. Today it may seem horribly complicated, but it worked at low temps when you were not near an electric outlet, and didn't have a fancy truck to jump start with.

If I'm not mistaken, 730s were a little over half produced with electric start, maybe 60 percent. I think 830s were less? In all honesty, given the nature of farmers, it's amazing the technology switch was that quick. My .02...
