Greg bought his first banjo at age 13 and by age 19 he had built his first banjo. He learned woodworking from his father who enjoyed building model airplanes. Banjos became a lifelong passion for Greg that exists to this day.
In 1997 Deering launched a line of banjos for beginner players . What separated these banjos from other beginner focused models on the market was these banjos were not cheaply made. In fact, don’t let the beginner classification mislead you. Professionals have used this Goodtime banjos to record – they sound amazing! The Goodtime banjos are made in the same facility by the same crafters with the same 3-ply maple rim used in their high-end banjos. They are built to last and include a 6-year warranty. They’re easily the best option for a beginner player on a budget.
In 1989 Deering purchased the Vega brand and began making new Vega banjos at their shop in Spring Valley, California. Combining the heritage and traditional aesthetic of early 20th century banjos with Deering’s modern banjo making ingenuity, this is a unique line of instruments that is worth a close look. The Vega Old Tyme Wonder is a very popular openback model enjoyed by beginners and more advanced players.
The Deering Eagle 2 Openback arrived in 2009 with the creation of the Twenty-Ten ™ tone ring, a Deering design that gives the banjo an extremely clear tone. It’s available in both right and left-handed orientations. Constructed from maple and stained dark red mahogany, this banjo looks every bit as good as it sounds. Perfect for clawhammer!
The best-selling Deering model is the Sierra and it’s available as an openback . It’s quite different from the Eagle 2 with its -06- 20 Hole Bell Bronze Tone Ring and mahogany wood construction. You can actually order a custom Sierra openback in maple or walnut at no additional cost. The Sierra is known for its bright, crisp tone and good note separation.
